High sun-protection clothing and high fashion don't usually go hand in hand, except when eight QUT design students are given the task of creating stylish AND practical sun-safe exercise wear.
The students have designed three running shirts that provide sensible sun protection, comfort and good looks for Cancer Council Queensland, launched today.
QUT fashion design lecturer Dean Brough said the SunSmart Fashion Project was a great opportunity for the students to put design thinking into a real-world problem.
"The students jumped at the chance to combine great garment design with the promotion of health and protection from one of Queensland's biggest health threats - too much sun," Mr Brough said.
"Their designs incorporate cooling vents, high necks, long short sleeves and the iconic daffodil logo of the Cancer Council into an affordable and wearable garment.
"They also took the opportunity to reimagine the daffodil logo and come up with some on trend textile prints."
Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said the exercise shirts would be finalised in partnership with Cancer Council, and supplied to event supporters as part of the Do It For Cancer campaign.
"The unique partnership with QUT has delivered a solution for active Queenslanders spending time exercising outdoors," Ms Clift said.
"We're proud to see such innovative active apparel designed for use in our subtropical climate - the garments are comfortable to wear in humid weather and offer the best protection against the sun."
