3rd November 2014

QUT will launch a Queensland-first new law and biomedical science double degree in 2015 that will open doors to the legal arena of medical and pharmaceutical commercialisation.

Hosted jointly by the university's Faculty of Law and Faculty of Health, it will be a 5.5 year full-time course, taught on the Gardens Point campus.

Students can select a biomedical science major, and electives from law or a university wide minor, such as a language.

The course also comes with real-world opportunities to complete up to 400 hours of work integrated learning in a science context and other work placements and international internships within law.

Demand for specialists who have knowledge and skills across a number of disciplines, such as biomedical science and laws, is increasing across local and international markets.

Biomedical research and the development of new biomedical products contribute to improving health outcomes worldwide, but the process of introducing them requires multidisciplinary teams that often include research scientists, engineers, business development specialists, intellectual property lawyers, clinical trials experts, marketing specialists, and legal experts with an understanding of compliance and regulations.

Graduates of the new QUT program may work in legal environments as a solicitor, barrister, in-house counsel, government lawyer or mediator. Graduates may also work in consultancy through the innovation and commercialisation of infrastructure including, for example, regulation, compliance and clinical trials.
