A new postgraduate scholarship backed by one of Australia's pioneers of digital culture research will enable outstanding QUT PhD students in digital media and communication to study in Oxford.

The John Hartley Oxford Institute Summer Doctoral Programme Scholarship was announced by QUT's Executive Dean of the Creative Industries Faculty, Professor Mandy Thomas, this month in Brisbane.

The scholarship has been made possible by a generous personal gift from the Creative Industries Faculty's foundation dean, Distinguished Professor John Hartley.

It will enable outstanding PhD students in the field of digital media and communication to attend the prestigious Oxford Internet Institute's (OII) Summer Doctoral Programme.

Two scholarships will be offered each year, thanks to QUT matching Professor Hartley's donation. Preference will be given to international, Indigenous and female students.

"I am delighted that we have been able to announce this new initiative and very grateful for Professor Hartley's ongoing support of digital media research at QUT," said Associate Professor Jean Burgess, the faculty's Director of Research Training.

"The scholarship represents a wonderful alignment between the Oxford Internet Institute's research agenda and John's pioneering work in the area of digital society and culture. The Creative Industries Faculty has built a strong institutional relationship with the OII over the past decade, sending at least one of our most promising PhD students in digital media, communication and cultural studies to the program each year since it began in 2003."

QUT's relationship with the Oxford Internet Institute was established during Distinguished Professor Hartley's leadership as foundation dean of the Creative Industries Faculty from 2001 to 2005.

Professor Hartley is now John Curtin Distinguished Professor and Director of the Centre of Culture and Technology at Curtin University and a Professor of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies at Cardiff University.

The scholarships are open to QUT Creative Industries PhD students who gain selection into the OII summer program. The two highest ranked applicants will automatically receive the scholarship each year.
