Aspiring tech gurus are encouraged to apply for the inaugural Westpac Bicentennial Foundation Young Technologists Scholarship at QUT.

The scholarships, worth $5,000 a year for up to five years, are open to Year 12 students who have applied to study a Bachelor of Information Technology with options to major in Computer Science or Information Systems, or a Bachelor of Games and Interactive Entertainment, or a double degree including one of these courses at QUT from next year.

The scholarships aim to develop a pathway for future technology leaders and to broaden the base and diversity of Australian technology graduates.

Three talented soon-to-be QUT students will be awarded the scholarships, which aim to build a highly skilled local talent pool of IT graduates.

Professor Gordon Wyeth, Executive Dean for QUT's Science and Engineering Faculty, said the scholarships offered students an opportunity to engage with the exciting new curriculum in QUT's Information Technology degree.

"At QUT, we are seeking to bring the best and brightest students into our courses to develop the technology that will drive the future demands of society and the economy," he said.

"As the world's dependence on ICT grows, so does the need for ICT education skills investment if we are going to contribute to the ongoing transformation of today's business models."

The CEO of the Westpac Bicentennial Foundation, Susan Bannigan, said scholarships would be awarded to students with the passion to bring about change through cutting edge technology and innovation.

"Increasingly, knowledge, ideas and innovation will underpin our economic growth and prosperity. We want to support and encourage more young people to gain the right skills and education to contribute to the future face of technology in Australia," said Ms Bannigan.
