The legal implications of the use of predictive technology for managing disaster is one of the topics up for debate at the next QUT Centre for Disaster and Emergency Management (CEDM) Forum on September 17.

CEDM director Professor Gerard Fitzgerald said the focus of the forum, titled Looking back and moving forward: Local government disaster management, was on the practical implications of the Disaster Management Act 2003.

"The Act provides the framework for all levels of government on cooperation to ensure effective disaster management including local disaster management plans which are the responsibility of councils," Professor Fitzgerald said.

"Recent natural disasters in Queensland have highlighted local authorities' legal liability in relation to disaster management and the standards required for best practice communication management plans.

"Looking back and moving forward: Local government disaster management is one of a series of forums conducted by CEDM to foster conversations in regard to disaster management."

The free forum's panel includes:

• Iain MacKenzie, inspector-general emergency management, Queensland Government
• Greg Swain, corporate communication manager, Brisbane City Council
• Dr Amanda Stickley, QUT Law

It will be held in the Gibson Room of Z Block on Gardens Point Campus at 5.30pm for 6.30pm start. RSVP by 12 September here.
