The weather might be chilly but QUT - and some local native animals - are giving 4000 new students a warm welcome during mid-year Orientation Week (July 14-18).

The university's student engagement manager, Peter Gatbonton, said more than half of the students commencing in Semester 2 were international students - a statistic that has motivated a few special surprises during the week.

"We like to have a bit of an Australiana theme because there are so many international students that start in the middle of the year," he said.

"The students love to see our native animals and this year we are bringing reptiles and marine life on to campus at Gardens Point and Kelvin Grove. There's snakes, birds, fish - I even saw a little shark out there this morning!"

The two campuses will also host information stalls and $2 lunches (Monday and Tuesday at Gardens Point, and Tuesday and Wednesday at Kelvin Grove).

The students will be officially welcomed to QUT - and Australia - on Monday afternoon (July 14) at a welcome event at Gardens Point.
