The future of one of the world's most important industries will come under the microscope during an international conference hosted by QUT this week.

The International Institute of Fisheries and Economics Trade biennial conference has been brought to Australia for the first time, with a global network of fisheries economists being hosted at QUT's Gardens Point campus until Friday.

IIFET 2014 has attracted about 300 experts, academics and policymakers to Brisbane, representing 70 countries from all of the world's major fishing regions.

QUT Business School Senior Lecturer in Economics and Finance and Co-chair of the conference organising committee, Dr Louisa Coglan, said it was a major coup for QUT to host the primary event in the international fisheries economics calendar.

"The conference is an invaluable opportunity for global experts, members of the fishing and aquaculture industries, and non-government agencies to come together and exchange ideas to further develop sustainable and productive fisheries," she said

"We are fortunate to have a number of distinguished speakers at the conference, covering the range of issues which are crucial to the future of this vital industry."

Keynote presentations are considering issues from ecosystems based fisheries management and use of economics in real world fisheries management solutions.

Speakers include QUT Business School Adjunct Professor Sean Pascoe, who will talk about successfully balancing economic, social and environmental objectives.

PhD students from QUT will also give presentations.
