QUT is gearing up for a fiercely competitive university sport season with new threads and a new mascot.

Around 600 student athletes will contest the 2014 Australian, Northern and Indigenous university games as the QUT Tigers.

Another 350 students from QUT's Elite Athlete Program will compete nationally and internationally, including at this month's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

"QUT has a rich student life and a formidable team spirit, which helps make us the top-achieving sports uni in Queensland," said Student Support Services Director Chris Hepperlin.

"We partner with community sporting clubs across Brisbane and our teams are out there competing every weekend.

"QUT is making things happen and getting results."

Last year QUT was crowned Northern University Games Overall Champions, beating 10 other universities across Queensland and northern New South Wales.

We were the top-ranked Queensland team going into the 2013 Australian University Games, hotly contested by 41 universities, where their shining spirit and outstanding on- and off-field behaviour won them the coveted Spirit of the Games Award.

The Tigers launched their 2014 attack last week with Australian University Sport CEO Don Knapp.

The team unveiled its as-yet unnamed mascot, a rugged tiger that proved very popular. Keep an eye out for an upcoming competition to officially name it.

"QUT supports us by giving us the opportunity to play sports while studying at uni," said men's rugby player Steve Young.

"It gives us a good environment where you can meet life-long friends along with playing the sports you love."

The week-long Northern University Games kick off this Sunday at several venues across the Sunshine Coast.

The Tigers would love to see you there to cheer them on. Watch the QUT Sport facebook page for venues and times.
