Acer, Asus, Giant, HTC and bubble tea - they are household names for brands and products that illustrate Taiwanese businesses are doing well in Australia.

To recognise the success of Taiwanese companies in Queensland the Australian Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce Queensland (ATCCQ) is calling for nominations for its inaugural business awards.

QUT Business School's Associate Professor Artemis Chang said QUT was a sponsor of the awards which aim to promote the status of Taiwanese entrepreneurs and recognise excellence in all aspects of trade between Taiwan and Australia.

"Brisbane hosts the largest community of Taiwanese people in Australia and we have an established friendly trading relationship with Taiwan especially with our sister city, Kaohsiung," Professor Chang said.

"Award entries will also help identify and develop potential business and investment opportunities in Queensland and Australia for the wider business community.

"We hope the awards will highlight the number and range of Australian Taiwanese business links and thus help strengthen networks, co-operation and friendships with and among Taiwanese entrepreneurs in Australia."

Professor Chang said QUT business graduates were welcome to enter the awards.

"We have many talented Taiwanese graduates working in Queensland who would qualify and have started their own businesses," she said.

The ACCTQ Business awards are open to any business that have an Australia/Taiwan link.

"We are calling for nominations in six broad categories to submitted by 9 May," Professor Chang said.

The categories are:

  • The Rising Star Award is for start-up businesses that have been established for fewer than two years and has a connection with Taiwan.
  • Export Award
  • Import Award
  • Taiwan Brand Award
  • Community Contribution Award - for any business or organization that has contributed to the public, particularly to the Queensland Taiwanese and multicultural communities
  • Business Excellence Award - business achievements in import/export or servicing of the local market including Taiwanese customers or Taiwanese owned and operated.

Professor Chang said the awards would be held every two years and were supported by the Taipei Economic and Culture Office, Trade and Investment Queensland, TAITRA, Brisbane City Council, Ipswich City Council, Logan City Council, Queensland Government, QUT Business School, Overseas Community Affairs Council Republic of China (Taiwan).
