6th May 2013

The inaugural QUT Classic has been run and won, with Brandon Dewar and Natalie Goodwin taking out the men's and women's 10km title, and Glen Yarham and Michaela Murray winning the 5km titles. More than 800 people competed in Sunday's fun run, including 86-year-old QUT palaeobotanist and World Masters Games competitor John Rigby.

Mr Rigby, a visiting academic who has been involved with QUT for 20 years, said a leg injury had kept him quiet in the lead-up to his 5km race, which he completed in 52 minutes.

"I had done no training at all for six weeks so that explains my poor time," he said.

"But I enjoyed the QUT Classic very much - and I got a free t-shirt!"

Mr Rigby competes in a major masters event every year, and was a member of the Australian team at the 2012 Pan Pacific Masters.

"I go in one major competition every year and I normally do the longest running event they've got," he said.

At QUT, his current work includes collaborating with Indian researchers on Indian fossil research.

The 2013 QUT Classic raised money and awareness for the QUT Learning Potential Fund, which provides around 2500 scholarships and bursaries to low-income QUT students every year.

Organisers have pledged to make the QUT Classic an annual event.
