Social media blunders make headlines. But a QUT expert says the greatest mistake a business can make is not being on Twitter, Facebook or Google+ in the first place.

Associate Professor Axel Bruns, from QUT's Creative Industries Faculty, said it was risky for companies, from big name brands to small businesses, to ignore social media.

QUT's new Introduction to Social Media short course, designed and co-facilitated by Professor Bruns, will introduce communications professionals to the dos and don'ts of social media and outline strategies to measure success.

"Many companies do not have a social media presence at all. If you're dealing with consumer products and services, you can't afford that," Professor Bruns said.

"That's as much of a problem as not using social media effectively.

"You should build support and enthusiasm around your brand on social media. Otherwise you basically leave that space to those who may be your competition, detractors or disgruntled customers."

The social media bootcamp is part of the Creative Industries Faculty's new short course and professional development program, which runs from July this year to May 2013.

It draws from the faculty's strengths across design, media and communication, creative writing, acting and visual arts disciplines, as well as film, TV and new media.

Courses include directing a musical, starting a first novel, beginning acting, a short history of modern art, designing and creating corporate videos, digital fabrication and furniture design.

Creative Industries Executive Dean Professor Rod Wissler said participants would get hands-on experience in QUT's computer labs, workshops, studios and performance spaces at the Creative Industries Precinct at Kelvin Grove and School of Design at Gardens Point.

"We have designed a range of short courses to meet personal interests, along with offering opportunities for industry professionals to gain new skills and knowledge to apply in contemporary industry contexts," he said.

'With our world-leading experts in social media management, we'll be offering additional short courses right up to certificate and masters levels over the next 12 months.

"I'd advise people to get in early to take advantage of these offerings. Building expertise in this area is an absolute no-brainer for any business these days."

QUT Continuing Professional Education certificates will be awarded to short course and professional development participants.

Introduction to Social Media will be offered twice, August 7, 14 and 21, as well as over January 15, 22, 29 from 6pm-9pm at Kelvin Grove campus.
