12th January 2011

As Brisbane remains on high alert for major flooding on Wednesday January 12, 2011, the University has this morning made the following key decisions regarding closure of campuses and cancellation of exams and classes.

Gardens Point campus will remain closed for all staff and students for the rest of the week.

Along with the CBD, QUT is currently experiencing inundation on the lower car park levels of those buildings closest to the river. Action has been taken to mitigate water damage in those buildings most at risk. Authorities have cut power to some buildings on the campus.

Due to flooding, Caboolture campus will also remain closed until the end of this week. Roads in and around Caboolture have been cut and there has been some inundation of the campus.

Kelvin Grove campus will be open only to a skeleton staff, as determined by staff supervisors.

QUT offices and operations at Margaret Street in the CBD, Doggett Street in Fortitude Valley and the QUT Printery at Milton will remain closed for the rest of this week.

All other off-site facilities are being monitored.

Examinations and classes cancelled
All examinations scheduled for this week have been cancelled and will be rescheduled for a date to be determined. All classes scheduled at all campuses this week have been cancelled.

Online registration for 2011 classes scheduled to be available for students from next week is now likely to be delayed. Students should monitor the QUT website for further information.

Power cuts have affected some of QUT's usual communication channels. Last night the University undertook a staged shutdown of its Gardens Point data centre, following advice form authorities. This has impacted on the reliability of some communication channels and corporate systems. The IT and student call centres are experiencing operational difficulties.

The best place to seek information from QUT will be the QUT website. Updates will be made to the flood update link on the homepage, AskQUT, QUT's Facebook page and through local ABC radio 612.

For those staff experiencing personal difficulties at this time the University would like to assure you that our thoughts are with you and remind you that counselling services are available through the University's employee assistance program for both staff and family through Assure on 1800 808 374. Students requiring counselling services may contact QUT's Counselling Services on 3138 3488.
