19th July 2010

About 7000 people are tipped to descend on Queensland University of Technology (QUT) on Sunday, July 25, when the Kelvin Grove campus hosts the annual QUT Open Day.

This year's event will run from 9am to 3pm and include loads of information about QUT courses and campus life, lots of things to see and do, and giveaways including free fairy floss, popcorn and lollipops.

Each faculty will host seminars about its courses and visitors will be able to attend talks on how to access more than $2.5 million in scholarships and bursaries.

Would-be engineers can vie for free iTunes vouchers by taking part in "Are You Smart Enough for Engineering?" quizzes throughout the day, and check out the QUT Motorsport team's race car and the uni's UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle).

Visitors can also tour the QUT Health Clinics where health students work with the public, and meet the uni's road safety experts and check out the new $1.5 million driving simulator at the Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation.

If creative writing is your thing, head to the Creative Industries Precinct to hear the next generation of authors do readings at 11.30pm and 1.30pm. The precinct will also open up its animation studios and visual arts gallery, and present a cinema showcase of student work.

With so much to choose from, open day coordinator Sarah Griinke has some simple advice for visitors.

"If you are planning to come along to the QUT Open Day on July 25, my biggest tip is to plan ahead - check out the website (www.openday.qut.edu.au) before you get here and work out your own program," she said.

"This is the best opportunity that you will get all year to talk to staff and students in one place.

"And it's not just for Year 12s ... there will also be a lot of information for mature-age students and people interested in postgraduate study."
