Artists and scientists alike are being called on to create imagery for a 45 metre long billboard and interstate "screen network" exhibition, curated by Queensland University of Technology (QUT).

Submissions are due at the end of May for the prominent Kelvin Grove Road billboard in inner-city Brisbane and a network of screens, including screens at QUT's Creative Industries Precinct and Melbourne's Federation Square, to be displayed during this year's Science Week (14 - 22 August 2010).

QUT curator Lubi Thomas said there was a great tradition of art and science working together.

"There is often great beauty in scientific data, such as the 'data' images collected by cell imaging facilities," Ms Thomas said.

Examples of scientific data as art can be found at www.wellcomeimageawards.org.

Ms Thomas said QUT was commissioning public artworks and images based on the concept of "linear progression".

"This exhibition is about seeing scientific data in a different light," she said.

"We wanted to choose a theme that was quite open: a starting point for ideas to bounce from.

"Linear progression is the inspirational starting point for artists, scientists or collaborative teams to interpret and produce artworks or images for both the 45m linear billboard that runs down the side of QUT Hub and the exhibition."

"This concept is based on the idea of scientists' empirical research, which takes a problem and finds a solution. We are open to a wide and variant approach to the site and exhibition title."

Scientists, artists and designers interested in submitting works for either the billboard or screen network can find more details at www.ciprecinct.qut.edu.au. For further details about submitting artworks for the screen network, email brittney.ouston@qut.edu.au.

Submissions close May 31.
