Queensland University of Technology has been awarded nine National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) grants in the latest round of funding, sharing in $3,811,070 of funding.

Professor Peter Timms, of the School of Life Science in the Faculty of Science, is a member of three of the research projects which received grants.

Two of these are based around his work in developing vaccines for Chlamydia, one study focussing on males and one on females, and the third is a study to understand how and why Chlamydia can lead to infertility in women.

The project Towards a Chlamydia vaccine for males: The key role of mucosal IgA received $401,750, Towards a Chlamydia vaccine for females; progression against transmission and disease pathology received $309,250, and Stress response proteases role for Chlamydia trachomatis was awarded $373,500.

Professor Timms said he and his fellow researchers were more than happy with the results.

"It means a lot to get these grants - you can apply for these grants but at the same time you don't really expect to get them," he said.

"We have done a lot of work in this area and have been working on it for a while, and are always more than pleased to receive the recognition and the funding.

"We have great teams and lots of people putting in their time for these projects, who will all be able to benefit from this."

The other QUT projects which received funding are:

- Kallikrein proteases and ovarian cancer ($783,750)

- A new online intervention for treating depression and alcohol misuse ($684,220)

- GABAergic mechanisms in eye growth ($305,850)

- Improving patient outcomes of radiotherapy treatments ($365,375)

- Improved culture of cells for human therapies ($264,250)

- Development of a novel material for repairing the eye ($323,125)
