It took QUT Fashion Honours student Morgan Hammond a weekend to come up with the intriguing design chosen for the 2017 QUT t-shirt design, unveiled in O Week, that has students searching for the icon signifying their study choice.

The t-shirt, as per tradition, is free to all first-year students and comes in four colours and features QUT written in icons representing each and every QUT school of study including a gavel for legal practice, a building and set-square for architecture, a lightbox for animation, and a newspaper for journalism.

"I added some things that relate to student life such as a student ID, a cup of coffee, and a bus stop on either side of the logo representing the intercampus shuttle," Morgan said.

“I used to be an advertising graphic designer and I played around for a couple of days with symbols to signify every school at QUT – I went through the list and found one for everything,” Morgan said of the design, dubbed QUT Iconic.

Morgan designs historical and theatre fashion and graduated last year with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Fashion) from QUT.

He has returned for an honours year to research how costumes can be translated from video games (namely Dragon Age) to film. Each year he makes mediaeval costumes for himself and friends to attend the Abbey Mediaeval Fair.

Morgan received his prize at the Orientation Week Welcome Party on Monday when the design of the t-shirt was revealed by dancers from QUT and Phluxus to music by Naomi Price and Brisbane nu wave band Bullhorn. Watch the Facebook Live big reveal.
