Exercise Carbs

Carbs during workouts help immune system recovery: Eating carbohydrates during intense exercise helps to minimise exercise-induced immune disturbances and can aid the body’s recovery, according to QUT research led by Dr Jonathan Peake and Dr Oliver Neubauer.

New Year’s resolutions: have yours gone up in smoke?:  It’s more than halfway through February and, for many people, those hopeful New Year’s resolutions have fallen by the wayside. But QUT neuroscientist Professor Selena Bartlett may have the answer to sticking with them long-term.

Orientation Week celebrations welcome more than 10,000 new students: More than 10,000 new ‘QUTies’ are starting uni this week with O Week celebrations including today’s official welcome.

Help imagine neighbourhoods of the future at QUT InstaBooth: Brisbane locals are invited to visit the QUT InstaBooth installation at Gasworks Plaza from February 20 to 27 to share their ideas on how urban communities in Brisbane will look in the future.

Fletcher Moot finalists en route to Sydney: Eight teams from around the globe have secured their place in the final rounds of the Ian Fletcher International Insolvency Law Moot 2017; a first-of-its-kind mooting competition sponsored by the QUT Faculty of Law, INSOL International and the International Insolvency Institute.

Professor Selena Bartlett appeared on Channel 9’s Today Extra program to talk about her new book on re-training the brain – MiGGi Matters. Her Australian launch at a QUT Wellness Matters event was also covered by The Seoul Times.
- The amazing work of critical care paramedics – and how they train at QUT’s Medical Engineering Research Facilty – featured in a Sunday Mail story that also highlighted the life-impacting gift of body donors.
Associate Professor Gary Mortimer (pictured) told Nine News duty free shops weren’t always the cheapest option, also talked to Nine about another Costco store, talked trading hours with 4BC’s Ben Davis, was interviewed by Smart Company about brands struggling in suburbia and David Jones’ gourmet food project, and spoke to ARM-APN about supermarket wars.Dr Gary Mortimer

Professor Peter Corke spoke to ABC Brisbane’s Steve Austin about the future of jobs and the rise robotics.
Professor Marcus Foth was quoted in a Raconteur story, ‘Singapore: the robot city’.
Michael Klaehn spoke to 612 ABC Evenings about brands having to reluctantly engage in politics and social media due to Donald Trump. He also outlined the top 10 global love Emojis and hashtags in Gizmodo Australia.
MIT News and Press Release Point talked up QUT’s MIT bootcamp.
Ch7 ran a story about state of the art childcare facilities, featuring Susan Hetherington, which was picked up by Essential Baby.
Professor Hilary Bambrick was quoted in Queensland Country Life on the need to tackle climate change by cutting emissions quickly as heat-related illnesses increase.
Business Insider covered world-first image recognition technology developed by TrademarkVision – an early beneficiary of QUT CEA’s creative tech startup fund. The story was also in StartupSmart and SmartComanyAustralian Anthill and AFR.
StartupSmart, SmartCompany and The Courier-Mail also reported on QUT CEA’s backing of photography startup Travelshoot.
CARRS-Q research on driver fatigue was mentioned in a story about potential roadside tests for fatigue in regional ARM-APN papers.
- The Commercial and Property Law Research Centre’s unit laws proposals for the Queensland Government were reported by The Courier-Mail and Gold Coast Bulletin, Fairfax regional papers,  mygc.com.au and Domain.
- The Courier-Mail’s QWeekend ran a cover story on two Brisbane people shortlisted for a possible Mars colony, which also quoted QUT graduate Dr Abigail Allwood (pictured) – the principal science investigator on NASA’s 2020 Mars Rover mission.

QWeekend also profiled immigrant hospitality businessman Sudhir Shetty, who has a Master of IT.
- The Northern Daily Leader ran a column that highlighted QUT research into how playing outdoors can help children avoid myopia.
Belinda Davies told The Courier-Mail bacteria and germs could quickly spread in large crowds if people didn’t wash their hands.
The Road Ahead profiled architecture alumnus Kerry Petersen who is building infrastructure for the Gold Coast’s 2018 Commonwealth Games.
- A QUT study into motorsport participation and road safety was also in The Road Ahead, and ran nationally in the Cars Guide in News Corp papers.
- The Wynnum Herald wrote about a QUT exercise program for women with breast cancer.
- QUT’s Australia-Korea Foundation Emerging Designer Exchange Program featured in Out in Canberra and BMag.
RN’s Big Ideas visited the glass exhibition at the QUT Art Museum and interviewed Antiques Roadshow glass expert Andy McConnell.
Time Out and the QUT Guild welcomed QUTies to the 2017 uni year and plugged O Week parties and the Study Abroad orientation.
EducationToday ran a story on bringing back the Narungga language using Nao robots.
Dr Wendy Miller (picctured with Prof John Bell) spoke to ABC Southern Queensland, ABC Newcastle and Sydney’s 2SER about the relationship between house design and its occupants staying cool.

Dr John Aaskov was interviewed by WIN TV about the Ross River virus vaccine for a story that ran across the network.
The Conversation published Professor Axel Bruns’ first Australian Twitter News Index which was dominated by Donald Trump and Melbourne’s CBD pedestrian tragedy. He also discussed big data on ABC Brisbane.
Time Out invited people to visit the QUT Creative Industries Precinct.
ABC Brisbane’s Emma Griffiths interviewed Malcolm Burt about rollercoasters.
London’s The Memo ran a Conversation piece by Professor Jonathan Roberts and Kate Letheren that pondered people one day falling in love with robots.
SeniorAu reported a trial of using shoe insoles for people with MS will take part at QUT’s Gait Laboratory and involve a multi-university team including QUT’s Professor Graham Kerr.
Dr Esther Lau and Professor Lisa Nissen wrote a piece for the Australian Journal of Pharmacy with advice for women on menstruation.
4BC’s Political Insiders segment mentioned Professsor Clive Bean’s take on compulsory preferential voting in Queensland. He also told HighBeam and ARN-APN papers the LNP would have likely lost the seat of Capricornia if compulsory land acquisitions were made public before the election.
- The Sunshine Coast Daily and other ARN-APN papers referred to CARRS-Q research in a story about possible roadside fatigue tests in Queensland.
- The Western Times welcomed QUT justice graduate Gabby Walter as one of Dalby’s new police constables.
International Mining ran a story on a new way to produce graphene developed by partners including QUT.
Albury-Wodonga’s Border Mail reported that Rutherglen Primary School, which was founded in 1869, had its first female principal – QUT masters graduate Karryn Williams.
Travel Retail Business reported QUT business and media and communication alumnus Helen Wong had left DFS to join Daniel Wellington as its Asia Pacific key account manager.
Architecture Australia ran a feature on the new Creative Industries Precinct Stage 2.
