15th February 2017

Just a few more sleeps till more than 10,000 new students come on campus for the start of their university experience.

QUT Orientation Week springs into action on Sunday 19 February with a free barbecue for new students and their family, friends and partners on the Kidney Lawn at Gardens Point Campus.

Then it’s on to the Sunday Social at Gardens Point open to all students enrolled in Semester 1 – a chance to meet new faces and enjoy some fun activities from 2 to 4pm.

A huge Official Welcome Party on the Kidney Lawn on Monday, 20 February from 4 to 5.30pm will top off a day of academic orientation with campus and library tours, study tips, international student orientation, and QUT Connect sessions with student volunteers who provide essential information and facilitate networking.

The Welcome Party will be hosted by Naomi Price with nu wave brass band Bullhorn, plus circus and dance from Phluxus2.

A special feature of the Welcome Party is the “big reveal” of the 2017 first year t-shirts. Part of a decade old tradition, students receives a free t-shirt with a fresh design created by a QUT graduate or design student.

First-year students can collect their t-shirt from the QUT Bookshops from Tuesday,  February 21 to Friday, February 24 upon presentation of their student ID card.

This year’s intriguing design came from Fashion Honours student Morgan Hammond who won a fiercely fought design competition. The design has a graphic referring to every study subject – a column for architecture, a gavel for law, a stethoscope for nursing etc.

Students will be able to explore more than 150 student clubs and societies at QUT and ways to get involved in university life, including international experiences, and diving into the startup and entrepreneurship community at QUT on Startups Day, 23 February at Gardens Point.

Startups Day features talks and workshops from alumnus and social media expert Rachel Mclean, and student clubs QUT Starters and Code Network.

Orientation has a packed timetable. There’s a Boardgame Bonanza, We love Short Shorts from the QUT Film Club and free yoga sessions, to name a few.

Students can download the OrgSync mobile app for android and iOS, to plan and manage their registration to events on http://www.orgsync.com/features/mobile so they don’t miss important things.

Visit the QUT Bookshop Facebook  page for a competition to win gift vouchers and a fun dart board lucky dip.

Students who want to see their face up on QUT The Cube during O Week can hashtag their pics with #QUTLife to see their content on screens around campus and in the #QUTLife social feed!
