New reef discovery from QUT, JCU & Uni of Sydney scientists

New giant donut-shaped reef revealed behind Great Barrier Reef: QUT, James Cook University and University of Sydney scientists working with laser data from the Royal Australian Navy have revealed a vast reef behind the world-famous Great Barrier Reef.

New pollen alert system helps hayfever sufferers plan ahead: Australia’s 2.3 million asthma sufferers have a new tool to help prevent life-threatening attacks caused by pollen, with a standardised air pollen monitoring and alert system available via app and web this spring.

QUT honours history in expanded Creative Industries Precinct: The rich Indigenous and military history of Kelvin Grove has not been forgotten in the expansion of the QUT Creative Industries Precinct, which opened to the public with the CreateX festival on 28 August.

Mungbean partnership to revolutionise fight against halo blight: The Australian Mungbean Association is joining forces with QUT and the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) on new research that aims to stop a plant bacteria seasonally affecting significant percentages of our mungbean crop each year.

National overhaul to know what teachers are needed and where: A leading QUT education expert says an up-to-date national register on what subjects teachers are needed for in secondary school would help universities better prepare graduates.

Uncertainty still surrounds Queensland abortion laws, say QUT researchers: The failure to recommend the decriminalisation of abortion in Queensland is disappointing and a missed opportunity to modernise existing abortion laws, say QUT health law academics.

- News about researchers including Mardi McNeil discovering a huge reef behind the Great Barrier Reef ran on ABC online, ABC PM, SBS, 3CR, The New Daily, Yahoo News, Smithsonian.com, Nature World News, Lonely Planet and Science World Report.
Michael MilfordProfessor Jonathan Roberts and Associate Professor Michael Milford (pictured) wrote a Conversation piece about the winners and losers in the race for driverless cars that was republished by ABC online, Gizmodo, B&T and StartUpSmart.
Associate Professor Janet Davies appeared on 9 News and ABC News 24 to talk about the early arrival of the hay fever season and QUT’s new pollen alert system. Professor Greg Kyle was also interviewed by 666 ABC Canberra on hay fever and how it can be treated.
Associate Professor Gary Mortimer spoke to 7 News about hardware chain Masters' big sale and for another story on losses felt by retailers due to a warmer than normal winter.  He also spoke to 9 News about housing development on the edge of Brisbane’s CBD.
The Courier Mail reported on the Queensland Government’s plan to review retail trading hours and will put together a stakeholder group led by Adjunct Associate Professor John Mickel. The story also ran in The Daily Telegraph, Herald Sun and Advertiser.
- CARRS-Q’s Professor Narelle Haworth appeared on 9 News commenting on the tensions between motorists and cyclists which are flaring up across Queensland.
Distinguished Professor Stuart Cunningham was in Gizmodo talking about the future of entertainment: YouTube driven ‘communitainment’.
Fairfax got 800 Words TV star Melina Vidler reminiscing about growing up in Samford and then studying acting at QUT.
- Brisbane entrepreneur Bruce Stronge told MSN about his successful startup Outfit and how he “cherry-picked” young IT grads from QUT to bring it to life.
- Business graduate Raissa Martin was profiled by APN after being selected for the Australian goalball team at this month’s Rio Paralympic Games, with The Courier-Mail’s Qweekend featuring education student Rachael Watson who will compete in the pool at Rio.QUT Creative Industries Precinct expansion
- The ABC’s Australia Plus ran a great feature on CreateX and how creativity met technology on the day. City North News also ran a feature on the opening of QUT’s expanded Creative Industries Precinct (pictured).
ArtsHub ran a Conversation piece on arts philanthropy by Associate Professor Wendy Scaife and Alexandra Williamson.
The Sunday Mail talked to Dr Christina Chalmers about teaching kids basic coding for a story about high-tech toys for Christmas.
Dr Cassandra Cross was interviewed on the 612 ABC Mornings program about her study into the impact of online scams, particularly romance fraud, and the victims.
Professor Marilyn Campbell told Channel 10’s The Project (22 minutes in) that banning phones at school wouldn't prevent cyberbullying.
- Media researcher Susan Hetherington was interviewed for a 7 News story (Brisbane, Sydney, Perth & Hobart) about a social media campaign to raise awareness about military veteran suicide rates.
Professor Chris Eves’ prediction of a fall in unit prices was reported across Queensland including in The Morning Bulletin.
Michael Klaehn talked to 612 ABC about apps and social media.
ABC Southern Queensland interviewed Professor Duncan Campbell about drones and a local forum on the drone industry and technology.
Professor Kerry Carrington commented in the Daily Telegraph on Queensland laws which allow 17-year-olds inside adult prisons.
Professor Kerry Sadiq (pictured) wrote an article for The Conversation on what Apple’s €13 billion tax bill meant for other multinationals. It also ran on ABC online and StartUpSmart and led to her being interviewed by ABC NewsRadio, Radio National and 2SER.
Kerrie SadiqProfessor Bill Caelli was interviewed on the 5AAA Adelaide morning program about ongoing problems associated with the 2016 Census, particularly for those who completed it online.
Real Time magazine reviewed Dr Keith Armstrong's Over Many Horizons installation at the UTS Gallery.
Dr Anne-Frances Watson talked to The Guardian about teenagers taking and sending nude selfies.
Professor Ben Matthews’ views on mandatory reporting of child abuse where included in an article on the issue by the UK’s The Guardian.
- Research by QUT, University of Sydney and the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital on a chemical that is paving the way for a new antibiotic to treat koalas with chlamydia featured in LabOnline.
Dr David Willis was interviewed for the Hong Kong based current affairs program Back Chat on RTHK Radio 3 about issues around the upcoming G20 meeting in Hangzhou.
Associate Professor Jennifer Firn’s research looking at the unbalance in nutrients threatening plant diversity received international coverage including in Science Codex and Science Newsline.
- Dr Rebecca Byrne talked to MSN about neophobia (a child’s displeasure at trying new food) and what parents can do.
Professor Paula McDonald was on ABC Radio National’s The World Today and other ABC programs to discuss employers keeping tabs on staff through online profiling, following a Conversation piece she wrote which also ran in the NZ Herald.
- QUT visiting bioethicist Professor Julian Savelescu talked to the ABC’s Health Report about whether doctors had the right to conscientiously object.
Andrew Quodling wrote a piece for The Conversation reviewing what the Children’s eSafety Commissioner had done in its first year to tackle cyberbullying. The article ran in Business Daily and he was interviewed on the topic by Radio Adelaide.
