Story Bridge from Kangaroo Point

From city to bush: Qld business legends inducted into 2016 Hall of Fame: Their names are iconic to their industries and now six of Queensland’s business legends have been honoured with a place in the Queensland Business Leaders Hall of Fame.

Bridge builder cemented into history books: The Story Bridge is Brisbane’s most iconic Margaret Mittelheuser Sept 1964structure and now the man who helped build it has been honoured with a place among Queensland’s business icons.

Nation’s first female stockbroker figures in Hall of Fame: Family folklore has it that when little Margaret Mittelheuser was collected from her first day of school, the astounded teacher asked her mother: ‘What have you brought us’?

IT industry pioneer inducted into Hall of Fame: Queensland IT industry pioneer Mincom started in 1979 when most mining companies didn’t even own a computer and tallied up their figures on accounting machines.

Pastoral heritage recognised in business icon honours: A pastoral empire that stretches across 5.8 million hectares has been inducted into the Queensland Business Leaders Hall of Fame.

Queensland’s biggest company earns Hall of Fame honour: It celebrates the centenary of its foundation this year and now Suncorp has made it into the history books as one of the newest members of the Queensland Business Leaders Hall of Fame.

CARRS-Q to host International Conference on Traffic and Transport Psychology: International experts will meet in Brisbane this week to share the latest in road safety research with the aim of reducing the global road toll.

QUT focuses on women in STEM: QUT is improving the representation and progression of women in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) disciplines. 

East Timor's new Doctor of Public Health dedicated to helping his people: The life-changing power of education was demonstrated with the awarding of a QUT doctorate to an East Timorese man who dropped out of school at 11 to help support his family while his father was a fugitive fighting for independence.

Youth justice experts want Royal Commission extended to all Australia: open letter: An open letter to the Prime Minister to extend the Royal Commission into Youth Detention to all Australian jurisdictions has been signed by Australia’s juvenile justice experts.

Winter school at QUT opens opportunities for Indigenous students: The QUT Winter School for Indigenous students brought together students from Queensland, South Australia and New South Wales to get a glimpse into life after school.

MEDIA HIGHLIGHTS

Kombucha clothing - vegan leather- The ABC’s Queensland TV news and News 24, along with ABC online and Radio Australia, ran stories on kombucha research being undertaken by Dean Brough and Dr Alice Payne.
- The 2016 inductees into the Queensland Business Leaders Hall of Fame attracted widespread coverage including The Courier-Mail, Sunshine Coast Daily, 612 ABC, Qld Country Hour (ABC),the news.com network and Bundaberg News Mail.
- QUT Creative Industries students featured on Channel Ten’s Totally Wild program showcasing what is involved in theatre production.
- Dr Sébastien Demmel from QUT's Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety Queensland was interviewed by Spencer Howson on 612 ABC about a CARRS-Q study into tailgating and why drivers do it. The story also appeared on ABC online.
- News.com, The Herald Sun, and Adelaide Now reported on the Australian Sex Survey being conducted by QUT and quoted Stephen Whyte from the business school on a question about gender identity which lists 33 possible answers.  A snippet on sperm donors ran across News Corp’s weekend papers in their Body and Soul liftouts, which was also based on Mr Whyte’s research.
- Virtual reality time travel app TimeLooper – which is now ensconced at QUT CEA – was profiled by The Courier Mail.
- Brisbane Times quoted Associate Professor Gary Mortimer about the perceptions of ethical shopping. The story also ran in New Zealand’s Manawatu Standard.
- Professor Lionel Page’s Young Economist of the Year award was covered in the French-language Lepetit Journal.
QUT COTSbot- 612 ABC spoke to Dr Feras Dayoub about its COTSbot (pictured) project being a finalist for the Australian Museum Eureka Prizes. Business Insider also highlighted the project.
- Professor Peter Coaldrake and Dr Lawrence Stedman’s new edition of their book raising the Raising the Stakes: gambling with the future of universities featured in Campus Morning Mail.
- Wheels Magazine quoted a QUT study that said petrol-powered cars would still dominate the Australian market in 15 years’ time.
- 612 ABC Weekends interviewed Dr Juliao Dos Reis about his life story from East Timor to Australia and back.
- Professor Frank Wagner commented in the NZ Herald on the potential impact of robots on the workforce and said only low cost environments need fear robots. The story was picked up by APN papers in Australia.
- RoboHub reported on a landmark workshop run by Associate Professor Ben Upcroft and Drs Juxi Leitner and Niko Suenderhauf.
- In an article that ran in the Courier Mail and Daily Telegraph, Dr Judith Howard said punitive strategies were unlikely to work with students who fell into the “red zone” behaviour category.
- Dance Australia profiled QUT Gene Moyle_2graduate Cloudia Elder in its 2017 study guide, with dancer and writer Michelle Dursun also sharing stories of her uni days at QUT.  The magazine also talked to Associate Professor Gene Moyle (pictured) – who is a dancer and a sports psychologist – for another story on overcoming setbacks.
- My Sunshine Coast published a story about more than 1500 state school teachers have hit the books as part of a STEM professional development program being offered by QUT and Griffith.
- Dr Judy Smeed's work to improve NAPLAN results for Toowoomba’s St Mary’s College students featured in The Toowoomba Chronicle.
- QUT’s robotics programs involving 240 secondary students from north of Brisbane featured in the Caboolture Shire Herald as part of the Moreton Bay STEMfest.
- Style Magazines ran a feature on three QUT business and creative industries alumni making it big overseas.
- Adjunct Professor Gary Johns was interviewed by Neil Mitchell on 3AW about whether Kevin Rudd would be endorsed by the Australian Government to nominate for UN Secretary-General.
- Professor Brian McNair authored a piece titled When terror goes viral it’s up to us to prevent chaos published on The Conversation, as well as Australian Business.
- Dr Mark McGovern wrote an article that ran in The Conversation and Business Daily about crippling rural debt and the threat to beef producers.
- As government-run surveillance gets smarter, hackers too get smarter argued Dr Monique Mann and Michael Wilson in a piece for The Conversation. It was reprinted across APN papers and by Business Insider and Lifehacker Australia.
